Winchcombe, the ancient Saxon capital of Mercia and once an important monastic seat, is now a quiet back-water, set in one of the most beautiful parts of the Cotswolds. It is the perfect retreat from city life. A truly delightful, friendly little place with a good selection of small shops, pubs and restaurants. Winchcombe's main claim to fame now is that it's the home of Sudeley Castle, which is well worth a visit.
The Cotswold Way passes through the village and the hills around abound in wonderful walks, with views right across to the Malverns and the Black Mountains in Wales . At weekends in the season a small steam railway, operated by enthusiasts, can supply a nostalgic ride for some... a novelty for others! The area around is rich in beautiful villages, historic houses and lovely gardens open to visitors. Cheltenham , Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, Chipping Camden and Broadway are all close by. Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick, Cirencester, Bath and Oxford are all about an hours drive. |
