L'ANCIENNE POSTE, Opoul Perillos, nr Perpignan, Languedoc-Roussillon

Fully restored, traditionally styled 'Maison de Maitre', in the centre of friendly wine village, 12 kms from the Mediterranean Sea and 45 mins from the Spanish border. Sleeps 10.

The friendly wine village of Opoul Perillos is 15km from Perpignan, 10km from the Mediterranean and 40 minutes from the Spanish border. Set in a valley of vineyards, it is overlooked by a ruined 12th Century chateau, and has a bar serving simple food, a post office, a boulangerie, a general store, and two domaines where you can taste and buy the local wines. There is a hypermarket in Rivesaltes, on the way to the beach, about 15 minutes away, and many restaurants in the neighbouring villages, in Perpignan and on the coast. Numerous traditional markets, fetes and opportunities enable you to sample traditional French life style, while the neighbouring village of Fitou has excellent wine and many good restaurants. For the children, there is a sports field with basketball, tennis and rugby pitch, two minutes walk from the house.

As its name suggests, L'Ancienne Poste is the old village post office, which has been fully restored, and furnished in traditional French style. The five double bedrooms are all themed to an artist or period of art - one has its own washbasin and bidet and two have an en-suite bathroom. There are two further bathrooms. One of the bedrooms and one bathroom are on the ground floor making it suitable for an elderly or handicapped person. The salon has French TV and an English video player with a library of English videos. For wintertime all rooms have electric heating. The salon has a wood burning stove and the kitchen has an open barbecue fire, wonderful for grilling on vine cuttings. Outside, there is a small courtyard and above the garden room, accessed by a spiral staircase, is a large sun terrace with sun loungers, table and chairs. The top floor of the house has been converted to an artists' studio, which is normally closed, but can be rented with the house for educational use.
