Elegant Grade II listed Georgian detached house with walled garden in famous ancient village, sleeps 8 + cot.

  FIELD BECK

Sleeps 8 + cot

  Cartmel, Cumbria

£420 - £750

Looking like the sort of late Georgian house that Jane Austen might have lived in, this elegant Georgian detached house is set in a quiet lane on the edge of the ancient village of Cartmel, famous for its priory church, racecourse, village square and several notable pubs and restaurants.  It is a Grade II Listed building and all its rooms catch the sun and overlook either the Priory church or the local fell.  It was built on the site of the medieval tithe barn and is surrounded by a walled garden with a pond and stream.

The Cottage
Over the last fifteen years we have restored its former glory and revealed many of the original features.  We have furnished it carefully to keep its charm and character, using period furniture and Laura Ashley fabrics.  Large enough for two families, the house sleeps eight comfortably, although it is also cosy enough for couples (to whom we offer discounts).

In detail, the accommodation comprises:-

Ground Floor
  • Sitting room with a log fire, colour television, video, CD player, together with a collection of games;
  • Dining room;
  • Well equipped kitchen including microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and drier, fridge / freezer;
  • Breakfast room;
  • Scullery.
First Floor
  • Two double bedrooms (one with washbasin);
  • Twin bedroom;
  • Bathroom.

Attic

  • Above is a large attic with two further single beds.

Beneath the house are extensive cellars, an extra cloakroom, and a games room.

Outside, the secluded sunny garden has a pond and a stream, garden furniture and a barbecue.

The Area Cartmel is famous for its 800 year old priory, its racecourse and picturesque village square.  It has four excellent pubs which all do good food and there are several exceptional restaurants nearby.

It is set in a lovely valley and, being off the busy tourist routes, it is ideally placed for visiting the Lakes, Windermere being about five miles away.  Apart from the walking and scenery there are many activities closeby, such as golf, swimming, tennis, steam railways, riding and country sports, and many stately homes and places of interest to visit.

The sea is three miles away Grange-over-Sands, and it's half an hour to the more raucous pleasures of Morecombe (children seem to love it!!)

Guests' Comments
Don't just take our word for it - here are some comments from the Visitors' Book at Field Beck:-
  • Your house is ideally situated in this corner of the Lake District.  We found all the local people very friendly and helpful………The garden is a lovely suntrap.

  • A beautiful house in a beautiful and friendly village

  • The house was very good.  You never felt alone in it.  There was such a great deal to do and see in the area.

  • Our second visit and the magic is still here...

  • We had an excellent time in this lovely place.  House cosy and convenient yet spacious.  What excellent views of the Priory.  We will surely come again

  • Had a wonderful time.  NO walking, swimming, climbing, etc.  Just food, drink, games, and best of all, SHOPPING!   Feel very relaxed.

  • Another visit to the Lake District is over but this is the best yet!  Cartmel is picturesque and unspoilt with eating places to match every need and that view of the Priory….. Walks to suit every mood and capability……Last but not least the house with its warmth and comfort.  A real home from home.  No criticism, just admiration, particularly the thought which has been put into the choice of colour and decoration plus soft furnishings and interesting furniture.  As I said, the best yet!

NB: ‘Field Beck’ is a very comfortable but old fashioned and idiosyncratic house.  Nearly half our bookings are from people who have been before, but if you want perfectly level floors and ceilings, and standardised furniture and fittings, please do not book ‘Field Beck’!!
