English Tourism Council 3 Star

The cottage is a cosy traditional stone built Lakeland quarryman’s cottage over 150 years old in the heart of the Lake District .  It is one of ten identical terraced cottages backing directly onto the hillside enjoying magnificent views across Langdale Valley to Lingmoor Fell and the Langdale Pikes.  The cottage faces west and in summer enjoys a sunny aspect from mid morning to sunset.

The Cottage The cottage has been furnished in keeping with a country cottage.  Many of the original features have been retained including the original cast iron Victorian open fireplace that is fully functional in the sitting room (coal is provided).  All doors have been stripped back to the original wood as have the window seats and main bedroom floor.  Two large wool rugs for warmth and comfort mainly cover the slate flagged floor in the sitting room and the original floorboards in the main bedroom.

The English Tourist Council quality assessment report describes it as “…a well presented cottage set in a delightful location with excellent views”.

In detail, the cottage comprises

  • Fully equipped kitchen, which has recently been tastefully refurbished with many modern conveniences including built in microwave.  Pine table & seats provide a dining area and there is a modern washer-drier machine available for use.
  • Utility room;
  • Sitting room with open fire, Colour TV, video player and videos, radio, books and games;
  • Ground floor bathroom with bath and shower;
  • Two bedrooms - the main bedroom enjoys views looking out across the valley, and has a double bed and small Victorian fireplace that is not operational.  The rear bedroom comprises two single beds.
A telephone is also available for use (incoming, local and emergency calls only), but please note that there is no mobile reception at the cottage due to the thickness of the slate walls and the surrounding fell side.

The Area Chapel Stile is a traditional Lakeland village.  It has approximately 400 inhabitants and consists of a Co-op store (closed on Sundays in winter), pub and church.  Quiet in the winter, bustling in the summer, the village is within ten minutes walk (half a mile) from the cottage.

The location is ideal for exploring central Lake District .  It is a walker’s paradise ranging from gentle strolls along the valley floor to strenuous hikes onto the fells.  Tracks lead directly from the cottage onto the fells behind with rewarding views within five minutes looking down the valley.  Prominent fells in the vicinity include the Langdale Pikes, Bow Fell, Pike O’Stickle & Sca Fell.  Other local areas of interest (within four miles) include:-

  • Grasmere village, lake and William Wordsworth’s “Dove Cottage”
  • Lake Coniston and Ruskin’s “Brantwood” country home
  • Hawkshead and Beatrix Potter’s “Hill Tops” home
  • Lake Windermere and Ambleside

There are many traditional English country pubs including Wainwright's Inn (Chapel Stile), The Britannia (Elterwater), Three Shires (Little Langdale) and Old Dungeon Ghyll pub.
