Overview of Cottage Accommodation Meadow Bank, Elterwater, Langdale, Lake District
English Tourism Council 4 Stars
In the very heart of the Lake District, yet a restful step away from the crowds of Windermere and Ambleside, the unspoilt Lakeland village of Elterwater is one of the most picturesque in the Lake District, and gateway to the famous Langdale valley. Indeed, as you come over the rise into Elterwater from Skelwith Bridge, you’re confronted with a typical Lakeland view: sheep grazing on the common in front of white-washed cottages with slate roofs, and the craggy peaks of the Langdale Pikes rising behind.
A stone and slate Victorian house in the centre of Elterwater, standing in its own mature gardens, Meadow Bank is a comfortably furnished holiday home. Set back from the narrow road which runs through the village, behind an old stone wall, the front of the house offers fine fell views to the north-west, while the rear views are across open fields to the beck. On the ground floor is a large kitchen with breakfast bar, oven, hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine / tumble dryer and microwave, a huge living / dining room with dining table to seat 10/12 and sideboard, comfortable sofas, and chairs, TV & DVD and micro hi-fi system, and a separate sitting room with two folding beds and TV. On the upper floor are four bedrooms - one double with portable TV and en-suite shower room, second double, two twins - and two bathrooms. Wifi included.
The Area: Elterwater, Langdale, Lake District
Elterwater is in the perfect location for exploring The Lake District, whether you prefer to sample the more touristy delights of Ambleside and Lake Windermere to the south-east, quaint and pretty Grasmere to the east, or the more rugged and 'typical' Lakeland landscape of the Langdale Valley to the west.
Leisurely strolls, or challenging walks start right from the doorstep of the cottage, where you'll find a wide selection of books and guides to help you plan your days. The surrounding fells include Crinkle Crags, Pike O’Blisco, Rossett Pike and obviously the Langdale Pikes.
As well as the scenery, you're spoilt for choice with good traditional pubs too - the Britannia Inn in Elterwater is a cracking traditional pub which is very popular with walkers, and has a good choice of local ales and excellent food. When the sun in shining, there's no better place for a lunchtime rest than the pub’s terrace overlooking the village green. Also worth a visit is the famous 'Hiker's Bar' at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in Great Langdale, where hikers and serious climbers have mingled for many a year, enjoying the selection of real ales and Scottish whiskies on offer.
