Three cottages around a private courtyard
in the centre of this highly regarded village in the heart of the White Peak
The six person picture postcard cottage (with three ensuites and inglenook
fireplace) is over 500 years old and heavily beamed as are the two 2 person
and three person cottages. All three have been extensively upgraded and
quite genuinely with little regard for expense over the last few months.

| The
Place |
This is an
extremely popular village during the day, but reverts to a quiet village
in the evening. Many people come just to park up as it is the start of
many excellent walks, has three teashops, two pubs, a couple of gift
shops, two grocers and newsagents, one with cash and lottery machines.
The village is famous for
its duck pond and Cheese factory (and well known cheese shop) where
genuine Stilton cheese (it can only be made in certain restricted areas)
and other local cheeses are produced and sold. There is also a fine
Norman
church, and a magnificent Jacobean Youth Hostel.
For us, however, our favourite feature
is the main approach to the village, down a three mile long dale, with
limestone cliffs towering above on either side. A really impressive
entrance! The River Dove is only a few hundred yards away and a very
popular walk starts in the village, over some lovely meadows to the River,
then along the stretch known as Beresford Dale (passing the fishing temple
where The Compleat Angler was written by Isaac Walton and Charles Cotton)
onto Wolfscote Dale.
We are fortunate in having cottages in
such a wonderfully central area in the Peak District, we are in fact
situated roughly in the middle of that part of the Peak District known as
the White Peak. This is the area of rolling countryside, dales, streams and rivers
limestone villages and dry-stone walls, which give the area so much
character. (The
Dark
Peak
is mainly moorland). Hartington's central position within the White
Peak is confirmed by its equal distance, namely 11 miles, from Buxton, Matlock,
Bakewell, Ashbourne and Leek, all towns on the perimeter of the
White
Peak
at different points on the compass. Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are
also similar distances from us.
Alton
Towers
is under 30 minutes drive away. The
Potteries
is within easy reach. |

Cottage, sleeps 6
English
Tourism Council 5 Stars
This cottage is between 500 and
700 years old, it could therefore have been built sometime in the
1300s. It was originally of cruck construction, with a thatched
roof. Some time later the thatch was removed, and the walls raised
to build a second floor. Part of the original cruck beam can still
be seen both downstairs and is in fact featured upstairs. The
walls, in part well over two feet thick, have a wonderful old
cottage style feel about them. There are still plenty of further old
beams to be seen, although not as old as the cottage itself.
Relaxing inside, you certainly feel you have stepped into the past,
(with all the mod-cons of course).
|
|
|
| In
the spacious lounge there is an impressive inglenook fireplace
with open grate, bordered by dressed stone lintels. There are
also original stone mullion windows and beams. Without doubt
this is a most relaxing room. There is a television with full
Sky package, video and CD player, but who needs these - whether
in summer or winter, just sit in the leather settees and look
at your surroundings! The cottage is well heated with fully
controllable central heating in addition to this open fire place.
All heating is included in the rental, as well as unmetered
internet access! |

|
|
|
|
| There
is a fully loaded superior custom built fully equipped kitchen, with
gloss work-tops and real granite sink, fridge with good sized
freezer compartment, micro-wave, dish-washer and washing machine,
adjacent to the open-plan beamed dining room. On the first floor are
three large bedrooms, all en-suite, two doubles and one twin. One
en-suite (in an entirely separate room off the bedroom) has bath
with shower over, the others (again one of them in an entirely
separate room leading off the twin bedroom) have large showers.
Again the age of the property is apparent from these rooms. |

| Behind Knowle
Cottage are two further stone cottages, converted from an old barn
Again these have been undergoing substantial upgrading, again with
little regard for the expense. They were previously for four persons
each but we have now made them both one bedroomed to give more room and
comfort to the occupants. Both have double beds, although
Manifold Cottage also has the option of an extra single bed,
giving the option of sleeping three in a room or
alternatively, using as two singles. Manifold's bedroom has a
vaulted ceiling enabling you to admire the original beams
whilst lying in bed! |

|

|
|
| Both cottages have log effect stoves
in the living areas, again fully controllable central heating
throughout, leather settees, fully equipped modern kitchens, again
with gloss work-tops and real granite sinks, fridge-freezers,
micro-wave, ceramic topped electric cookers (far more controllable
for cooking than traditional electric cookers) and plenty of beams
and interesting features. Being in the courtyard, they are exceptionally quiet.
Again there is provision for parking in the courtyard. |

We already have a number of
cottages up at our non-working farm a mile up the road, between
Hartington and Biggin (See our web site for details of these
cottages www.cotterillfarm.co.uk).
Our cottages, 2 bedroom / four
person occupancy, and one spacious 2 person cottage (as large as the
four person cottages) were converted in 1995, and we were well
pleased with the classification of these cottages by the English
Tourist Board as 'Highly Commended', and now under the new
grading system 4 Stars. Despite this good grading, we have
constantly striven, we believe with some considerable success, to
improve the standards of these cottages, a reflection of our
determination to offer the best possible holiday to our guests. |
