Discover
Val d'Isère...
After the final few bends through the narrow Daille gorge,
you arrive at last...
The mountains open up revealing a spectacular valley in
which Val d’Isère and its hamlets nestle.
Firstly, the Daille with its sturdy stone houses in the
heart of the hamlet surrounded by larger more modern buildings.
To your right you may catch a glimpse of the Daille ski
slopes (these are the very slopes on which the World Cup
Skiing events take place) as well as the ski lifts (of which
the Funicular mountain railway promises to whisk you to
the summit of Bellevarde in no time)
Continue on your way and cross the Daille plains. The "Isère"
river is on your right, breathtaking mountains all around
with Solaise in front.
There’s no doubt about it, you have just entered
a summer sports paradise! |
|

|
You then pass the Cret hamlet
on your left. This residential quarter of Val d’Isère
is a real architectural treasure, home to a number of
chalets each more beautiful than its neighbour. Finally
you cross the threshold of Val d’Isère village
along the main road. Bus station, shops, restaurants,
bars...All present and correct...
Small village squares and fountains
are dotted along your way, simply to encourage your carefree
wanderings.
Once in Val d’Isère,
you may choose to turn right. This choice will take you
:
-
Either to the
"Centre sport park" at the bottom of Solaise
and Bellevarde
-
Or towards the
old town and the pedestrianized Val Village, where old
houses, chalets and more recent buildings encircle the
church steeple. A sprinkling of traditional balconies
decorate the narrow streets and epitomize the character
of a carefully preserved genuine alpine village.
-
Or towards the
“Rond Point des Pistes” and the Joseray,
Legettaz and Chatelard hamlets situated at the gateway
to the Manchet valley. This valley may be reached on
foot or by car. There you'll find the "Manchet
sports park". The view is exceptional and a peaceful
atmosphere reigns over the entire valley.
-
Or towards the
residential Balme district at the foot of Bellevarde
|
Keep straight on and you
will go through Val d’Isère and out the other
side.
New plains stretch out before you and the Laisinant hamlet
nestles to the right.
Continue on your way and you will reach the final hamlet
in Val d’Isère : Fornet. The main dwellings
are antiquated stone chalets which have been carefully preserved.
It seems that this hamlet has remained aloof from the effervescence
of Val d’Isère’s centre. A haven of peace
and quiet, an ideal place to recharge your batteries.
And here you are at the foot of the Col de l'Iseran...
Just get up there to enjoy the amazing views... |

GRANDES
ALPES" ROUTE
From Menthon to Thonon les Bains, discover
the "Grandes Alpes" Route. You can have a few minutes
walk on this amazing road or, if you want to discover the whole
of the road, use a bike, a motorbike or a car... You will be astonished
by the beauty of the landscape and all the rest...
|
Val d'Isere is located
on the "Grandes Alpes" route, halfway from Menthon
and Thonon les Bains, so the village is the perfect place
for a few hours or a few days rest. Coming from the Col
de l'Iseran, Val d'Isere is only 15km away.
From high peaks to large valleys, from
the eternal snows to beaches in the South of France, the
"Grandes Alpes" route is an amazing journey.
The road was created by the "French Touring Club"
in 1909. The French President Albert Lebrun inaugurated
it in 1937.
But the second World War stopped the
increasing car tourism development, and it was only in the
50's that the road became more and more famous.
Today, this road is well known world
wide by the lovers of the French Alps.
So, if you too, want to discover identity,
culture and history of the Alps...
There is just one thing to do... Take
the road...

climb mountains...
And the Iseran pass is one of the most
famous mountain passes in the Alps. This road that links
the Tarentaise and Maurienne valleys was inaugurated in
1937.
Since 1937, every May or June, the snow
is cleared from the road so that bicycles as well as motorcycles
and cars can use it...
The famous "Tour de France"
has used the pass.
The "Grandes Alpes route"
also goes through the pass. |
