| The Village | Chatel is a traditional Savoyard village, which has retained its rustic charm, despite being at the heart of the largest linked ski area in Europe - The Portes du Soleil - with over 650 kms of marked runs. Being a bustling 'proper' town, it is well equipped for a self-catering ski holiday, with a good range of supermarkets, bakers etc, in addition to the good selection of ski hire shops. For non-skiers, there is also a good range of other shops to browse around, as well as ice skating, tobogganing - or even the chance to try your hand at the luge!! The restaurants on the slopes are plentiful, offering a mixture of self-service and served options. Mercifully few are the conveyor-belt type establishments you find in some resorts - rustic with warm open fires being more the order of the day!! |

| The Skiing | The Portes du Soleil covers a total of more than 650 km of marked runs, providing something for skiers of all standards, with a one-day 'circuit' of the area that should be within the reaches of all but the most inexperienced. And for the experts, there are a number of good black runs, including the famous 'Wall', going over into Switzerland. Some people though may never want to go beyond the main Chatel area, with 40 runs immediately surrounding Chatel itself - 5 black, 17 reds, 12 blues and 6 greens - a total of 27 snow cannons ensuring good snow generally until late April. Many of these take delightful tree-lined routes in their lower stages - and end, of course, conveniently near to a bar or restaurant offering a welcome mulled-wine! There are a number of lifts going up from various points in the village, and these are all linked via a Navette bus running every 20 minutes from 8.15am to late evening. A particularly nice feature of this resort is that the ski school meeting place and main nursery slopes are at the top of one of the main lifts - so Beginners can feel much more part of the group if you are a party of mixed abilities, and can enjoy the benefits of a nice mountain-top restaurant like the rest of you!! |
