| The Area | Porthleven is an attractive, unspoilt fishing village in South West Cornwall situated in the middle of Mount’s Bay. To the east lies the Lizard Peninsula and to the west, Land’s End. The harbour forms the centre of the village and is flanked on either side by fishermen’s houses, shops and restaurants.
Porthleven has a wealth of coastal paths and country lanes. One mile to the east of the village is the famous Loe Pool, Loe Bar and the beautiful Penrose Woods, all under the auspices of The National Trust. To the west are coastal paths to Bishop’s Rock, Rinsey and Praa Sands. There are two miles of beach and several nearby golf courses, park and sports centers. There are regular bus services to Penzance, Falmouth and Truro. Although Porthleven has, within easy reach, all the charms and amenities to entertain those who want a relaxing holiday, it is also very central to a whole host of attractions. The famous Cliffside open air theatre at the Minack is a mere 30minutes drive. The Tate Gallery is only 20 minutes away and Land’s End Theme Park is just 20 miles away. For the younger visitor Flambards Theme Park and Poldark Mine are just four miles away. There are beaches to the east at Gunwalloe Church Cove, Poldu, the spectacular Kynance Cove, Kennack Sands, Maenporth, Swanpool, and Falmouth. To the west are Praa Sands, Marazion and Porthcurnow. Some of Cornwall’s most picturesque towns and villages lie within a twenty-mile radius. To the east, Mullion Cove, Cadgwith, and, across the King Harry Ferry at Truro is Roseland with its beautifully set church at St Just, and St Mawes with its Tudor castle. To the west is St Michael’s Mount and Mousehole, and fifteen miles to the northwest, St Ives and the dramatic North Cornish Coast. Truro, Cornwall’s only cathedral city, is only fifteen miles away, and the lovely Helford River, made famous in Daphne Du Maruier’s novel Frenchman’s Creek, and Gweek, with its seal sanctuary, are less than ten miles away. |
