Gites de France Brittany, La Fontaine Rouille La Longere

Gite Accommodation

Our aim is to ensure the gîtes at La Fontaine Rouillé are places we would choose for a holiday ourselves. You have space to yourself, but we are on hand to answer any queries you may have to help you make the most of your holiday. Each gîte has been comprehensively equipped to cater for long or short stay guests at any time of year. Both are totally separate entities with their own private outdoor facilities; however, subject to availability
we do accept bookings for the pair and offer a group discount.

La Petite Maison - sleeps 4

The charmingly updated traditional Breton cottage houses a two bed roomed gîte for up to four people, arranged as one double and one twin room. All the accommodation is on one level, which is approached up a few steps from the south facing grounds.

Off the hallway is a roomy dual aspect kitchen-diner fully equipped for four people to cook and eat in comfortably. Opposite is a separate light and airy sitting room with chestnut flooring, sofas, wood burning stove, television and DVD. Either side of the hallway are the two wood floored bedrooms which have working shutters – ideal if you want a lie in. Finally there is a very spacious tiled shower room.

The mature sunny garden has a multitude of flowering shrubs and several fruit trees and views across the neighbouring fields to Loudeac Forest; there is a built-in barbecue, and table and chairs to enable you to make the most the outside space, the boundaries of which are fenced, tree bordered or walled creating an enclosed private garden for the exclusive use of cottage gîte guests.

La Longere Apartment & La Longere - sleep 2 and 6

The ancient stone longere is accessed via a traditional Breton arch leading into the entrance hall which is open to the full height of an original A-frame, this along with the gnarled oak beams, reveals some the structure of this sympathetically restored farmhouse that now provides a character gîte with lots of modern comforts.

La Longere Apartment (Ground Floor) - sleeps 2

Off the large hallway is a well-equipped open-plan kitchen area with window seat, and opposite is a separate, spacious, dual aspect living room with dining area and comfy sofas, a wood burning stove, television and DVD. French doors lead from the sitting room end of the room onto the terrace which is for the exclusive use of longere gite guests. Also opening through French doors to the rear is the ground floor double bedroom with adjacent shower room, making this property an ideal option for any guests wishing to avoid stairs; whilst also providing a lovely romantic hideaway for couples, who can walk out to breakfast on the terrace while taking in the surrounding countryside.

La Longere (Ground and First Floors) - sleeps 6

For larger parties of up to six the gite extends upstairs; off the galleried landing, where some of the oak beams can be seen from above, there is another double bedroom and a spacious twin bedroom, each having its own ensuite shower room and continuing the character of the building there are exposed A-frames throughout. This is an ideal gite for parties of friends or families wishing to share living accommodation but wanting their own private facilities.

Outside from the rear terrace, with built-in barbecue, garden table and chairs, there are magnificent views out over our large grassed paddock which has some apple and oak trees on its border, across open countryside to the river valley and distant forest beyond.

Facilities

Bed linen and kitchen towels are provided along with a small welcome pack to help you feel at home. Bathroom towels may be hired by guests flying to Brittany.

Both gîtes have fully equipped kitchens, sufficient heating and fans to make them comfortable for use throughout the year, a daily 200 litre tank of (very) hot water is included.

Bedrooms all have wardrobes, chests, mirrors and chairs, with both low or high tog duvets provided according to season; one infant bed (size 140 x 60cm) and high chair may be advance reserved in addition to the existing beds (subject to availability).

The living rooms have wood burners, televisions receiving UK free-to-air programs and DVD players together with a variety of books and board games.

There is a separately accessed storage room available for walking boots, golf clubs, fishing equipment and cycles (including 2 bicycles available for guests to use); along with a laundry area for the exclusive use of gîte guests.

On site parking for up to four guests’ cars is available.

The Area

La Fontaine Rouillé is an ideal spot for a barbecue, relaxing with a book and a drink, watching the bird life, sketching the scenery, cycling around the country lanes, strolling beside the nearby river or taking a longer ramble into the forest. Positioned in a rural setting in two acres of grounds overlooking the river valley and forest where there is plenty of private outdoor space, individual barbecues and patio furniture for each property. This really is a chill-out zone, but with a thriving village close by and near enough to good markets, restaurants, several exceptional historic towns, inland lakes with plenty of activities or the scenic north coast beaches and golf courses, there are plenty of options for everyone.

Le Vaublanc, Brittany
Le Site de la Roche au Cerf, Brittany

Plessala, our nearest village, can supply all your day to day shopping needs along with fishing permits for the trout lake from the mayor’s office and delicious lunches from the Crêperie. There are plenty of good local
restaurants in the vicinity along with a nearby wine bar, with occasional live music for evenings out. Le Site de la Roche au Cerf is an ancient stepping stone river crossing in the valley directly below La Fontaine Rouillé, where the shallow waters are ideal for cooling off in hot weather and lovely to sit beside with a picnic. 2km downhill Le Vaublanc is the site of an old forge, now occupied by a religious community who bake up to ten varieties of delicious bread the traditional way and are pleased to show their wood fuelled ovens to passers-by stopping for a chat and to buy a loaf.

The area is particularly suitable for ramblers, cyclists and those with an interest in history. There are several marked circular trails, taking in Plessala’s Celtic crosses, ranging from 5 to 16 kilometres, along with numerous other tracks through the forest. We have a selection of attractive local walks with directions translated into English for our guests to follow. The former railway line accessed at nearby La Prenessaye is one of
a variety of good cycle/foot paths in the vicinity with bike hire available from the towns of Plemet and Plougenast which are also starting points for canoeing along the river. The Lié is popular for river fishing, whilst many of the picturesque villages in the area, including Plessala, have small parks with trout lakes. There are riding stables situated on one edge of the forest where ponies may be booked for treks; or take a 10 minute drive to La Cheze and discover a museum of local artefacts, a large fishing lake alongside the river and in the summer months an open air swimming pool.

A short drive takes you to Moncontour, a perfect place to visit to absorb some of the area's history. Designated a Breton 'Petit Cite de Caracter' it perches with almost film-set perfection on a hillside; containing within its
centuries old walls fascinating higgledy-piggledy streets and buildings with unbelievably low doorways, along with a costume museum. It also boasts a selection of good restaurants for both lunch and dinner. The nearby towns
of Lamballe and Ploeuc-sur-Lie both feature weekly traditional markets with local produce and real Breton flavour whilst Loudeac has an excellent swimming pool complex with chute and Jacuzzi.

For exploring further afield, La Fontaine Rouillé is an ideally positioned touring base; a 10km drive takes you to an intersection of major routes throughout Brittany. Half an hour in any direction brings an enormous range places to visit. North to a range of picturesque sandy beaches and coves filled with sailing boats between Erquy and Cap Frehel, where the “Viking” castle with magnificent views tops the cliffs close to Pleneuf Val-Andre’s famous international standard golf course. East to Dinan or Josselin wonderfully preserved walled medieval cities with castles, winding streets and really individual shops. South to Pontivy a pretty Napoleonic canalside market town with a Chateau, or west to Lac de Guerledan, Brittany's inland lake district with beaches, wind surfing, boating and lake tours. Alternatively take a trip along the Nantes to Brest Canal; we are roughly half way between both those large cities, so either direction has many attractions available.

Getting here

Plessala can be reached in one hour from the ferry port at St Malo or Dinard and Rennes airports, where hire cars can be arranged. Nantes, Roscoff and Brest are well under two hours drive, whilst the Normandy ports of Caen and Cherbourg are around 2½ hours.

Main roads throughout Brittany are well signed, remarkably traffic free and easy to negotiate. If you let us know your arrival point we can recommend the best route here.
