Situated on the fringe of the village of Dunwich in woodland surroundings with abundant wildlife, the cottage is within walking distance of the village, the RSPB Minsmere Bird Sanctuary and in close proximity to the sea. Beautifully furnished and well-equipped, the cottage accommodation is all on the one level, with two bedrooms, both with ensuites, to sleep up to four people.

The Cottage

Lodge Cottage is situated on the periphery of the beautiful coastal village of Dunwich. Dunwich was one of the largest sea ports in England in the middle ages, thriving on the wool trade with the continent. Most of the original town is now some distance out to sea after many years of persistent erosion. Various remains of the old town remain such as the Monastery and the Lepers quarters by the church. There is interesting museum that has a wealth of relics from the past and tells the story of the demise of the original town.

The centrally heated cottage consists of two bedrooms, one double and one twin, both ensuite, the twin having a separate internal toilet. The beamed living room is spacious and comfortable with a colour TV, radio/CD/tape player. The kitchen contains an electric hob oven, microwave, fridge freezer and washing machine. There is ample off road parking and a sheltered garden patio in an informal garden. There is a public phone 2/3 of a mile away but alternatives are available in emergencies. It is requested that there is no smoking in the bedrooms and the cottage is not suitable for pets or children.

The cottage itself is set in a secluded, but not isolated, situation in an attractive woodland setting rich in wildlife. Muntjac deer, woodpeckers and a wide variety of flora and fauna abound in this tranquil setting in close proximity to the sea. It is situated in the upper part of the village and a ten minute walk from the pub.

The Area

The village itself is situated within walking distance of Walberswick and the RSPB bird reserve at Minsmere. The village is surrounded by the North Sea on one side and heath land, woodland and marshes on the other. There are many public footpaths and the area and walks of various lengths through different surroundings.

It is within easy driving distance of Southwold and Aldeburgh. Snape Maltings and Concert Hall are half an hour’s drive away and a little further the beautiful Suffolk Village of Orford, known amongst other things for the Butley/Orford Oysterage renowned for it’s smoked salmon and oysters.

There is a very small shop in the village selling some local produce and gifts. The well stocked Post Office in Westleton (2 miles) sells most other essentials. In addition the local pub, “The Ship”, serves a variety of dishes and the famous “Adnam’s Ales” are available amongst other beverages. For those wanting a “Take Away” there is the well regarded Dunwich “Fish and Chip” shop that is open from Easter to the end of September. There are several other Hotels and Restaurants within easy reach by car. For the nearest Supermarket it is necessary to visit Leiston or Aldeburgh.

There are many well signed walks around the village through a variety of scenic countryside with a wide variety of animals and birds to be seen, red deer on the heathland , foxes and badgers, to name but a few. Minsmere is an internationally acknowledged bird reserve owned by the R.S.P.B with many birds of passage passing through on migration and some interesting seasonal residents. Walks along the shore in either direction from the village are equally beautiful with miles of largely untouched deserted beach before you.

In the surrounding area cinemas, golf courses, bike hire, sea cruises and a variety of other entertainments are available in the surrounding towns.
