Living Accommodation

Looking like the sort of late Georgian house that Jane Austen might have lived in, this elegant detached house is set in a quiet lane on the edge of the ancient village of Cartmel, famous for its racecourse, village square and several notable pubs and restaurants. It is a Grade II Listed building and all its rooms catch the sun and have lovely views to the local fells or over the water meadows to the great medieval Priory. It is surrounded by a delightful and sunny walled garden with a pond and stream.

The house has retained all its original features and we have furnished it carefully to keep its historic charm and character. On the ground floor is a sitting room (with woodstove, Freeview TV, DVD player,iPhone dock) a dining room, a well equipped kitchen (including dishwasher, microwave etc), a breakfast room, and a scullery. The first floor has two double bedrooms (one with washbasin), a twin bedroom and a bathroom. Above is a large attic with two further single beds and an extra TV. Beneath the house are extensive cellars, an extra cloakroom, and a games room providing mini-snooker, table football and dartboard. Outside, the garden is a real sun-trap and has garden furniture and a barbecue.

The house sleeps eight comfortably but there is only one bath/shower. The main bedroom has its own washbasin and there is an extra loo downstairs but six is probably a better maximum number of adults. We do give discounts to small groups.

The Area: Cartmel, Cumbria, Lake District

The delightful village of Cartmel, famous for its ancient Priory and charming racecourse, is perhaps now better know as 'Foodie Heaven' - in fact, it was recently referred to as the 'Padstow of the North', and featured in a Rick Stein TV series. The two Michelin starred L'Enclume has four times been voted Britain's Best Restaurant.

Its village shop is a great delicatessen and world famous for its Sticky Toffee Pudding (now stocked by Waitrose no less). There is also a wonderful cheesemonger, an artisan bakery, a great wine store, a micro-brewery and a chocolatier! Every month there is an open-air food market. There are several justly named 'gastropubs' and Field Beck is situated in a quiet back lane but only five minute walk from all this.

Field Beck actually overlooks the Priory, whose founder, William Marshall, was one of the chief architects behind the Magna Carta. More recently Cartmel was voted 44th best place in the world to visit by the New York Times while here it was voted best place to live in Britain by the Sunday Times.

Reviews of FIELD BECK

I am not a person who normally writes reviews, but feel it is appropriate on this occasion due to the fabulous two week holiday my wife, my five grown up children and I had in Field Beck in August 2015.The attractions of Cartmel are a few minutes walk away but the Priory and grounds sit between that part of the village and Field Beck. You can sit in the lovely garden and not hear the bustle of the village at all. This holiday cottage has been carefully and thoughtfully decorated, furnished and maintained, and has everything you may need. There is plenty of space and you are not on top of one another by any means. Repeat business is clear from the visitor’s book, if you are lucky enough to secure a visit to Field Beck you will definitely want to come back. Book early...

The house was exactly as described, and the view of Cartmel Priory from the back of the house was wonderful, the peace and quiet were just what we needed . The village is just a short walk away, no need to take the car and the local pubs all served food which was good. We even got to go to the Races . All in all its a lovely house in a lovely village and we hope to go back very soon .

This place has a very special atmosphere - we were blessed with a couple of sunny days which meant we could indulge in the lovely garden.
I just soaked in the view, whenever possible.
Not a place for those demanding modernity but just great for those wanting to take a few deep breaths & kick back.
John (the owner) was totally fantastic.
So hope we can return again soon - though the teenagers may need a little more persuasion!

We spent 2 weeks in July 2011 in beautiful Fieldbeck -3 Adults & 4 boys aged 6yrs to 14. House is exactly as in description and Cartmel is a beautiful & relaxed village and good base to explore the Lake District from. The boys had plenty of space with the basement (snooker table, football table and darts) & garden as well as 2 tvs in the house meant that they were happy and had enough space to also enjoy quiet time if required. This in turn meant that the adults also had plenty of room for family time as well as individual space and peace! Fieldbeck is a perfect holiday cottage that ticked all our boxes giving everyone a lovely relaxed holiday without the "I'm bored" being mentioned which gets top marks from us. We enjoyed it so much that we all want to go back again next year :-)

Thank you John & Pat for all the thought and effort you have put in to the house which has created a lovely home to stay in.

Field Beck is a lovely house, full of character and very comfortable. It is situated in a wonderful setting, with a charming sunny garden, overlooking fields and Cartmel Priory. Field Beck's owner has spared no expense or thought to ensure that guests (and their children) will have everything necessary for a home from home holiday. The house and garden are very well maintained with many visitors returning year after year.
