Photos and Description of Cottage Accommodation: Squirrel Cottage, Snape, Suffolk

Squirrel Cottage is a charming cottage in the centre of a small terrace of three, situated on a private driveway, tucked away near the end of a quiet country lane, with off road parking and easy walking distance from the famous Snape Maltings.

The cottage is perfectly situated for exploring the Suffolk heritage coast on foot, cycle or by car with the beautiful seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold only a short distance away. Snape is an area of outstanding natural beauty famous for its forest walks, salt marshes and wide estuaries. A 2 minute walk away from the cottage is several hectares of land which the RSPB purchased in 2008. They are currently in the process of returning the land to its natural state of marsh/wetland. Since this time there has been an increase in Marsh harriers, Bitterns and Barn Owls in the area.

The sitting/dining room is a cosy, comfortably furnished room with a wood-burning stove, Colour TV with Freeview, DVD, CD/cassette radio and dining table seating up to six. There is also a small reading room downstairs with a single futon which doubles as a third bedroom. The newly-fitted kitchen is well equipped with electric cooker, fridge/freezer, microwave and washing machine, and looks out on to a beautifully paved terraced garden. Upstairs is the bathroom together with two tastefully furnished bedrooms - one with a 4’6 bed, the other with a 4’ bed. Bed linen and towels are provided.

The cottage is south facing and therefore captures the sun rising in the east just in time for breakfast in the terraced back garden and similarly sets in the west in time for supper! Greater Spotted Woodpeckers, Goldfinches, Blue, Great and Long Tailed tits regularly feed from the two bird tables in the garden along with a wide variety of other birds.

Two cycles and a barbeque can be made available if required. A welcome basket is provided on arrival with fresh free-range eggs from our very own hens as well as some essentials to ensure you can make a hot drink and have a snack on arrival.

We regret no smoking and no pets (Assistance dogs welcome by prior arrangement).

"We have had a lovely relaxing week here and have very much enjoyed staying in the cottage. Thank you for the warm welcome – especially the ‘welcome basket’! It has been a lovely homely place to stay with plenty of things to keep us entertained in the evenings. We have enjoyed our first visit to Suffolk including Kayaking on the Mere in Thorpeness in beautiful weather, spotting Red deer at Minsmere and exploring the Pier at Southwold (the sweet shop in Southwold is also a must). Thank you for a lovely week. "

"Thank you Caroline and Tim for your welcome and the ‘loan’ of your lovely and incredibly comfortable cottage. We have been blessed with the most incredible weather and go back tanned and refreshed. The stay has confirmed, if it were needed, that this part of Suffolk is very special indeed. Even a Sandhill Crane all the way (off course) from Northern Canada (yes I did see it!) thought so!"

Squirrel cottage is an excellent base for those who enjoy activity based holidays such as walking or cycling (various maps and guide books available on the bookshelf). It has immediate access to a network of small country lanes and a myriad of footpaths which extend across large parts of east Suffolk.

A 2 minute walk away from the cottage, at the end of the lane is several hectares of land which the RSPB purchased in 2008. They are currently in the process of returning the land to its natural state of marsh/wetland. Since this time there has been an increase in Marsh harriers, Bitterns and Barn Owls in the area. The views are beautiful and will be stunning once the land is flooded.

The area contains some of the county’s highly rated pubs and restaurants most of which are reasonably priced. There are 3 good pub/restaurants in the village all within walking distance from the cottage..

The cottage is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are all local amenities plus a fabulous range of shops at the famous Snape Maltings. A wide variety of local produce can be found at the local farmers market and the farm shop.

A short drive away is Tunstall and Rendlesham Forests which contain Fallow and Roe Deer and a wide variety of beautiful birds. Some of the county’s best loved seaside resorts are on the doorstep such as Aldeburgh, Thorpeness, Southwold, Walberswick and Dunwich. Those visitors wishing to explore local history can visit Sutton Hoo - the famous burial ship site, Framlingham and Orford Castles.

Snape Maltings Concert Hall provides a focus for a wide range of cultural activity such as Opera, classical concerts, dance, poetry as well as Jazz and modern music. The concert hall is within easy walking distance from the cottage. Aldeburgh is just a ten minute drive away and has its own cultural festivities as well as a cinema. Enjoy…….
