A cottage holiday doesn’t need to be all about self-catering, so here are our Top 5 Cottages located near to Award-Winning Gastro Pubs or Restaurants.

1. The Seahorse, Dartmouth, South Devon

Top Cottages for Gastro Restaurants

The Seahorse in Dartmouth, South Devon – The Observer Food Monthly Restaurant of the Year

If the photo above doesn’t make you want to just hop in your car and get down to Dartmouth for some fresh-off-the-boat seafood, then maybe the fact that The Seahorse Restaurant was voted Top Restaurant in the UK at the Observer Food Monthly Awards in 2012 will tempt you to make the trip.

Described by the judges as “the sort of brilliant seafood restaurant you hope to find in Italy, France and Spain, and never do”, it’s all about fresh locally caught fish and seafood, cooked relatively simply, and is actually the cheapest restaurant in our list, especially if you take advantage of the £20 2-course lunch menu.

Steps down from the sitting room lead to a luxury bathroom with an oval air bath, big enough for two, in which guests can have a gentle and relaxing aqua massage.

2. L’Enclume, Cartmel, Cumbria

Cottages close to L'Enclume Restaurant

One of the creations at Simon Rogan’s Michelin 2-Starred L’Enclume in The Lake District.

Winning awards left, right and centre, Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume in the Cumbrian village of Cartmel deserves a visit, both for its exciting, experimental cooking as well as for its commendable use of only locally sourced produce. Visually stunning dishes are never quite what they seem – an apparent egg yolk may well be a jellified stock, or what look to be mushy peas could in fact turn out to be brussel sprout puree!

Holiday Cottage Cartmel Cumbria
Stay at Field Beck, an elegant Grade II Listed detached house set in a quiet lane on the edge of the village, within easy walking distance of L’Enclume. Sleeping up to 8 people in four bedrooms, the cottage is available for weekly lettings year-round, or weekends/short breaks outside the main holiday periods. Weekly prices start at just £550 for 8 people.Alternatively, couples and smaller groups might want to consider Cartmel Holiday Cottages – two cosy two-bedroomed cottages a mile north of Cartmel, 400 yards apart with their own secluded gardens & parking. Weekend prices start at just £213 for up to 4 people, with weekly rentals from £355.

3. The Star Inn, Harome, North Yorkshire

Heading across The Pennines now, for more beautiful creations (though more suitable for tighter budgets!) at The Star Inn in the picturesque village of Harome on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. Winner of the White Rose Awards Yorkshire Pub of the Year 2012, this pretty thatched pub has a bit of something for everyone – fine food obviously, but with the option of enjoying it in a more traditional pub environment or in the formal restaurant. Chef Andrew Pern’s style of cooking again places great emphasis on regional and seasonal ingredients, including game and local North Sea caught fish.

Stay at The Cottage Gillamoor, a gorgeous, well maintained stand alone cottage in the village of Gillamoor, ten minutes’ drive away from Harome.  Beautifully furnished, well-equipped, and with the most wonderful Welcome Baskets, this two bedroom cottage  sleeps up to 4 people, with weekend prices starting at £180, and weekly rates from £280.

4. Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles

Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles

Voted the #1 UK Restaurant in The Sunday Times Food List 2012, Andrew Fairlie’s 2 Michelin-Starred restaurant in The Gleneagles Hotel as you might expect is a highly polished operation, although maybe less predictable in this traditional setting is the presence of some eastern influences in the cooking. There remains however the presence on the menu of locally sourced game and seafood that one associates with Scotland. “Stylish, original, clever, but not too clever” sums up one of the ultimate gastronomic experiences.

Gleneagles ApartmentStay at Gleneagles Apartment at Guthrie Court – a luxury 3-bedroom apartment set within the mature grounds of the Hotel, with an open plan lounge/ dining room with balcony and outside seating area from which to enjoy the stunning views.  The hotel itself is a resort geared for enjoyment and offers a wide range of sports and leisure facilities, many of which are available to non-residents of the hotel. In addition to the three 18-hole championship golf courses and the nine-hole Wee Course, there is a Golf Academy and practice ground.  Short Breaks in the apartment start at £450 for 3 nights, with weekly rentals from £600.

5. Morston Hall, Morston, Blakeney, North Norfolk Coast
